The Secret Story of Sonia Rodriguez by Alan Lawrence Sitomer

cover_imageSonia is a slave to her culture.  One where women are responsible for all of the cleaning, cooking, and child rearing. She wants to do well in school and graduate, but taking care of the family including her "Druncle" proves to be, at times, too much.  She is sent to Mexico to live with her cigar smoking grandmother and cousin Maria for the summer.  There she discovers her roots and the love of Mexico. Her life takes many turns some good, some not so much.  I am very glad I read this book due to the explanation of Mexican culture.  There are mature scenes and language in this story which enhances its authentic voice.
